Book Description
The principles portrayed in "Learning Wheels" are not new. The ideas and concepts are not breakthrough thinking, as most of us have seen these practices applied at some level throughout our experience. Reading this book serves only to create a clearer vision of an approach and create a new attitude regarding diversity of experience, education and opinion. The next logical step is to foster these attitudes within your organization as a new behavioral norm. This can be achieved through specific seminars and change management initiatives designed to introduce and sell "Learning Wheels" concepts to any learning organization. If your meetings are not gaining effective agreement. If your team is having problems defining the correct problem before solutions. If the diversity in your group is acting as a barrier to progress rather than functioning as an asset; then consider using "Learning Wheels" as a tool to refocus your team.

Book Description
Wheels Summary Affectionately called "Wheels" because he's in a wheelchair, the main character is in his final year of high school and should be graduating, but his marks leave that in doubt. He avoids unpleasant things but that makes problems worse. Wheels attracts equally apathetic friends. His outgoing personality (and the fact that he soon turns the legal age to buy smokes and liquor for them) make him popular. He realizes that he will probably be back next year, but he doesn't care. A teacher lectures him about his unfinished assignments, wasted year, and ability to do better. Wheels becomes so angry that he decides to get even by making the class hell for her. That results in frequent visits to the principal's office and Wheels becoming even more angry. The sudden death of a friend shakes him up. He realizes life is too short to waste it in school another year. He and a friend decide on a final effort to do a project that could get them a pass to graduate. They want to "pimp out" Wheels's electric wheelchair and finally do convince their teacher to let them try it. They enthusiastically fit the chair with custom lights, wheels, etc. The wheelchair is stolen, and though recovered, it is stripped. They are upset but turn that anger into fixing the chair and hoping to graduate. The final scene is graduation as the graduates are introduced. Have Wheels and his friend made it?

Book Description
Although verbal learning offers a powerful tool, Mayer explores ways of going beyond the purely verbal. Recent advances in graphics technology and information technology have prompted new efforts to understand the potential of multimedia learning as a means of promoting human understanding. In this second edition, Mayer includes double the number of experimental comparisons, 6 new principles - signalling, segmenting, pertaining, personalization, voice and image principles. The 12 principles of multimedia instructional design have been reorganized into three sections - reducing extraneous processing, managing essential processing and fostering generative processing. Finally an indication of the maturity of the field is that the second edition highlights boundary conditions for each principle research-based constraints on when a principle is likely or not likely to apply. The boundary conditions are interpreted in terms of the cognitive theory of multimedia learning, and help to enrich theories of multimedia learning.
