Book Description
From ‘Duck and Cover’ in the 1950s, when American schoolchildren were instructed to hide beneath their desks in the event of nuclear attack to contemporary campaigns against pandemic flu, education campaigns have been used to prepare the general public for apocalyptic events. Governments have made use of various media from films, leaflets and television to the internet to inform, inspire and scare populations. Forms of disaster education also permeate popular culture with films and television programmes illustrating survival techniques from dealing with terrorist attacks in ‘24’ to thwarting zombie apocalypse in ‘The Walking Dead’ and ’28 Days Later’ . Using critical race theory and whiteness studies the book argues that information about disasters has always, tacitly or overtly, prioritised the survival of certain groups of citizens above others. Drawing on examples from the UK and the US, from past and contemporary disaster education and popular culture, it considers that rather than being kitsch, naïve and ephemeral, such campaigns are central to the way in which states define survival, life and death. The book will be of interest to educationalists, historians, sociologists and cultural theorists as well as those working in emergency planning, public health and communications.

Book Description
As a city boy, all Philip Dixon wanted to be in life was a farmer, but achieving that ambition would be a lot less straightforward than he had anticipated! Starting work on a farm at the age of fifteen, Philip finds himself handling some highly temperamental bulls, meeting some very ‘witchy’ women and encountering mysterious country ways. Later he gets married, raises a family, acquires his own farm and, along the way, becomes part of the Round Table team that invented the charity plastic duck race! Enjoy Philip's story as he makes progress in his farming career in the north east of England from the 1960s to the mid-1980s, and meets some remarkable characters, many of whom belong to an age all but lost to us. Philip's story will, at times, have you laughing out loud and weeping tears of sympathy, and will lift your spirits as you read how he overcomes all life’s setbacks to make plans for a brave new future. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 11.0px Arial}

Book Description
New adventures. New rules. A new type of hero... El Capitano is fed up. His home city of Derby has suddenly been transported to the other side of the galaxy, and there is no getting any sense out of the lighthouse alien who may have been responsible. Is that confounded woman Amelia Hammerhorn going to be of any use in getting the city home? It’s alright for his sister Barbarita Santacruz, though – all she has to do is create lasting world peace on Earth. El Capitano soon discovers there is more to the Derby problem than meets the eye and that is summed up by one word: Equinox. If you like your action adventure stories laced with mysticism, accents, big machines and lots of food and drink, this is for you. A ride you won’t want to get off – even if El Capitano does.

Book Description
Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Sociology - Law, Delinquency, Abnormal Behavior, grade: A, University of Derby, course: BA in Sociology and Film and Television Studies, language: English, abstract: I have critiqued an article 'Get Ready to Duck: Bouncers and the Realities of Ethnographic Research on Violent Groups'(Winlow, S., Hobbs, D., Hadfield, P., Lister, S., (2001) 'Get Ready to Duck: Bouncers and the Realities of Ethnographic Research on Violent Groups', British Journal of Criminology, 41, 536-548.) that deals with violence in a job role. Bouncers have a reputation for violence and the following article investigates the bouncer's role using qualitative research. The method used is covert ethnography. I will examine this article in terms of the methodological approaches, size of the sample, and the moral and ethical problems with the method used; the use of deceit; the possibility of using violence whilst working on the door and views on ethical problems. I will investigate the strengths of the article and identify the limitations of the article.
